Babinski reflex noun[ C ] medical specializeduk /bəˈbɪn.ski ˌriː.fleks/ us /bəˈbɪn.ski ˌriː.fleks/(alsoBabinksi's reflex, Babinski sign, Babinski's sign) an automatic physical reaction in which someone turns their toes upwards instead of downwards when the bottom of their foot is touched. It is normal in children younger than 2 years old, but can be a sign of damage to the nervous system in adults: A positive Babinski reflex, that of the toes curving upward, is normal in infants. To elicit Babinski's reflex, the nurse strokes the sole of the patient's foot with a moderately sharp object, such as thumbnail. Babinski's sign is the earliest to occur in the presence of upper motor neuron pathology. Myelopathy causes severe sensory loss of posterior column sensation, spasticity, hyperreflexia, and positive Babinski reflexes. Upper motor neuron disease is characterized by spastic paralysis, hyperreflexia, and a positive Babinski reflex. Examination may reveal a positive Babinski sign and hyperreflexia, consistent with cerebral oedema.
