Eye dialect can be controversial because it often relies on stereotypes that may offend some readers. Eye dialect, the use of misspellings that are based on standard pronunciations (such as "sez" for says or "skool" for school), is sometimes used in literature for comic effect. The use of modified spelling, for example indicating clipped gerund forms (singin', goin') or dropped hs ('ello, 'ome) in literature is generally referred to as eye dialect. The term "eye dialect" was originally coined to apply to spellings such as "woz" that more accurately represent the typical pronunciation of "was", but is also commonly used to indicate that a character's speech is non-standard, foreign, or uneducated.
