Bearberries grow in northern latitudes all over the world. Bearberry has historically been used for medicinal purposes. I grabbed a handful of berries from a bearberry and chewed on them as I went along. The leathery leaves of the bearberries formed a dense mat beneath the trees. Arbutin, which can be extracted from the bearberry bush, prevents the formation of melanin and so is used in skin-lightening products.
