AMD is degeneration of the macula lutea and is a leading cause of irreversible vision loss in the over fifties. There is a minute depression called fovea centralis in the centre of the macula lutea. Using an ophthalmoscope, the lens, the vessels of the retina, the optic disk, and the macula lutea can all be inspected. While the macula lutea necessarily alters spectral sensitivity, we do not perceive these differences across the eye due to higher order processing.
