British breeds whose numbers were declining included the otterhound, the Sussex spaniel, and the Manchester terrier. The staff at the shelter thought that the dog was likely to be a Manchester terrier mix. The Manchester terrier and the fox terrier are a similar size and both have traditionally been used for ratting and other vermin control work.
