metanephros noun[ C ] anatomy specializeduk /ˌmet.əˈnef.rəs/ us /ˌmet̬.əˈnef.rəs/pluralmetanephroiuk /ˌmet.əˈnef.rɔɪ/ us /ˌmet̬.əˈnef.rɔɪ/ a structure found in a human embryo(= a baby before it is born) that develops into a kidney, or a similar structure in the embryos of mammals, birds, and reptiles: The metanephros is the third and final stage, and gives rise to the definitive adult kidney. In the embryo, the kidneys develop from three overlapping sequential systems; the pronephros, the mesonephros, and the metanephros. Some of the tubules of the metanephros form part of the permanent kidney. In mammals, the metanephros is the excretory organ of the foetus, which develops into the mature kidney. The transplantation of embryonic kidneys, metanephroi, may offer a potential solution to the problem of kidney donor shortage.
