motor unit noun[ C ] anatomy specializeduk /ˈməʊ.tə ˌjuː.nɪt/ us /ˈmoʊ.t̬ɚ ˌjuː.nɪt/ a motor neuron(= a nerve cell that sends messages to muscles) and the muscle fibres it supplies: A muscle is formed by many motor units, each one bringing its own specific contribution. Muscle strength decreases with age, partly due to a reduction in the number of motor units, and in part to muscle atrophy. French- and Spanish-speaking children use different visual and motor units during spelling acquisition. With progressive muscle contraction, increasing numbers of motor units are recruited, and each motor unit fires at a more rapid rate. An excitatory impulse causes contraction of all the muscle fibres in that motor unit.
