The neurolemma, or primitive sheath, has the appearance of a delicate membrane. The myelin sheath is under the neurilemma, which is like another sheath. Components of the peripheral nerve include the cell body, axons and dendrites, the cell membrane (neurolemma) and, in myelinated nerves, the Schwann cell. The axis-cylinder is the essential part of the nerve fibre, and is always present; the medullary sheath and the neurilemma are occasionally absent.
