odontoblast noun[ C ] anatomy specializeduk /əʊˈdɒn.tə.blɑːst/ us /oʊˈdɑːn.tə.blæst/ any of the layer of cells on the outside of the pulp of a tooth (= the soft tissue inside a tooth) that produce dentine(= the hard substance that forms the main part of a tooth): Along the border between the dentine and the pulp are odontoblasts, which initiate the formation of dentine. Nerves have been traced to the odontoblast layer at the base of the dentine. The pulp consists of a fine network of reticular tissue, together with the peripheral layer of odontoblasts. Odontoblasts have a relation to the development of the teeth similar to that of the osteoblasts to the formation of bone. The dental papilla contains cells that develop into odontoblasts, which are dentine-forming cells.
