out of play phrase If a ball or puck is out of play, it is not in a position where it can be hit, kicked, or thrown: The ball had gone out of play. In tennis, the ball is out of play if it goes outside the lines or bounces more than once. The pass was ruled incomplete because the ball was out of play when the quarterback threw it. The puck went over the boards and is out of play. The ball hit the ground before he recovered it and so is out of play. See also
