perichondral adjective anatomy specializeduk /ˌper.iˈkɒn.drəl/ us /ˌper.əˈkɑːn.drəl/(alsoperichondrial, uk /ˌper.iˈkɒn.dri.əl/) relating to the perichondrium(= a thin layer of tissue that covers cartilage): In perichondral ossification, bone arising from precursor cartilage develops on the surface of the cartilage. They form a thickened flat layer to which perichondrial or periosteal fibres are attached. Functionally, the perichondral ring provides stability. In the early phase of this developmental process, osteoblastic precursors differentiate from perichondrial cells. A bud of perichondrial tissue can be seen entering the shaft of the cartilage.
