Located between the arachnoid and pia mater is the subarachnoid space. The three membranes that enclose the brain and spinal cord are the dura mater, pia mater, and arachnoid. A craniotomy was performed and an aspiration needle directed underneath the pia mater to remove cortical tissue. The space between the arachnoid and pia mater is filled with cerebrospinal fluid.
