Acquiring domestic skills also would enable pupils of the lower stratum to earn their own livelihoods as seamstresses, laundrywomen, or cooks. Through anthropological research and use of secondary sources, the authors place the persona of the seamstress centre stage, viewing the transformations of clothing production and demand through her eyes. Porter's study considers together seamstresses, cigarette workers and street vendors and explicitly excludes both paid and unpaid domestic labour - the most common forms of women's work.
