Sertoli cell noun[ C ] anatomy specializeduk /sɜːˈtəʊ.li ˌsel/ us /sɝːˈtoʊ.li ˌsel/ any of the long thin cells found on the walls of the seminiferous tubules(= thin tubes inside the testicles where sperm is produced): Sertoli cells enfold the spermatogenic cells and testicular spermatozoa, protecting them and supplying them with nourishment. Throughout spermatogenesis, germ cells maintain a close and essential interaction with Sertoli cells. In male germinal cells, the Sertoli cells are responsible for the nourishment of germ cells with ribosomal RNA. These facts suggest that contact with Sertoli cells mediates the completion of the spermiogenesis. Sertoli cell tumours and seminomas are more common in retained testicles.
