The stapes first appears as a ring encircling a small vessel, the stapedial artery. The stapedial reflex is the involuntary and bilateral contraction of the stapedius muscle, due to excessive stimulation of the inner ear. The stapedial artery is the embryonic precursor of the adult internal carotid, internal maxillary, and middle meningeal arteries. Testing the stapedial reflexes was not possible in all patients.
