stapedius noun[ Cusually singular ] anatomy specializeduk /stəˈpiː.di.əs/ us /stəˈpiː.di.əs/pluralstapediiuk /stəˈpiː.diˌaɪ/ us /stəˈpiː.diˌaɪ/(alsostapedius muscle) a small muscle in the middle ear that is connected to the stapes(= a very small bone that carries sound) and that helps protect the ear from very loud sounds by controlling movement of the stapes: The muscles of the middle ear are the stapedius, which depresses and retracts the stapes, and the laxator tympani, which relaxes the membrane. The patient could not tolerate loud sounds due to paralysis of the stapedius muscle that contracts and holds back the stapes if the ear is exposed to loud sound. Hyperacusis occurs if the nerve to the stapedius is involved. Acoustic reflexes are the bilateral contraction of the stapedius muscles in response to loud sounds. The stapedius muscle is the smallest muscle of the human body, measuring approximately 6 millimetres in length.
