stomodeum noun[ Cusually singular ] anatomy specializeduk /ˌstɒm.əˈdiː.əm/ us / ˌstoʊ.məˈdiː.əm/pluralstomodeums or stomodeauk /ˌstɒm.əˈdiː.ə/ us /ˌstoʊ.məˈdiː.ə/ an area on the outside of a developing embryo(= a baby before it is born) that curves inwards and that later becomes the mouth: The lips, teeth, and gums are formed from the walls of the stomodeum. At this point, a small pit called the stomodeum forms that will eventually become the oral cavity. During the third week, two areas of thickened ectoderm appear immediately under the forebrain, in the anterior wall of the stomodeum. The mouth is developed partly from the stomodeum, and partly from the floor of the anterior portion of the foregut. Unlike the rest of the upper respiratory tract mucosa, the sinonasal mucosa is ectodermal in origin, derived originally from the stomodeum (primitive mouth) in the fourth week of gestation.
