strike zone noun[ Cusually singular ] uk /ˈstraɪk ˌzəʊn/ us /ˈstraɪk ˌzoʊn/ in baseball, the area into which the pitcher must throw the ball for the batter to try to hit. Batters do not have to try to hit balls that are not in the strike zone: He likes to throw the ball into the lower part of the strike zone. He swung at a pitch that was well out of the strike zone. None of the first three pitches were close to the strike zone. In the early days, umpires were not asked to interpret a strike zone. They expanded the strike zone to include the area between the hitter's belt and the chest.
