People affected with brucellosis usually develop symptoms similar to severe influenza. About half of Yellowstone's roughly 3,000 bison have been exposed to brucellosis, a disease that was eliminated from Montana cattle in 1985. Brucellosis can cause animals to abort foetuses or give birth to weak calves. Swine brucellosis can be transmitted to people through infected pork.
