Tired is the most common word used to say that you need rest or sleep.


I'm so tired, I need a nap.

If someone is extremely tired, you can say that the person is exhausted or worn out.


I'm too exhausted to take the dog for a walk.
I was completely worn out.

You can describe someone who is tired because they have been working very hard as burned out or drained.


He was completely burned out after a full week of performances.
I'd worked a twelve-hour day and was absolutely drained.

You can also informally say that someone who is extremely tired is wiped out or dog-tired. In very informal UK English, you can also say they are knackered, stonkered, or shattered.


I've been up since 4 a.m. and am just wiped out.
I've been on my feet all day and I'm dog-tired.
UKAfter a long day of shopping, I'm just knackered.
UKI was absolutely stonkered after that long run.
UKMoving house has left me shattered.

If someone is tired and wants to go to sleep, you can describe that person as drowsy or sleepy. If that person is so tired that they can't get to sleep, you can say they are overtired.


The heat had made me drowsy.
I'm feeling a little sleepy - I think I'll go to bed.
The baby is overtired and will cry for the rest of the night.
