These words and phrases are used to describe when something starts burning, or when you cause something to start burning.

When something catches fire or catches alight, it starts burning without anyone meaning to set fire to it. Catch alight is less frequent than catch fire.

He was badly burned when his clothing caught alight.

Kindle is used when you make a fire by causing small sticks, pieces of paper, etc. to burn.

If something bursts into flames, it suddenly starts burning strongly.

In slightly more formal language, something that combusts begins to burn suddenly.


Oily rags placed near an open flame could spontaneously combust.

In formal language, something that starts burning ignites.


The gasoline ignited and the house was engulfed in flames.

If you set something on fire, set fire to something, or, in UK English, put a match to something, you cause it to catch fire and start burning. Put a match to is used when you cause something to start burning intentionally. These phrases do not imply that the thing that begins burning is completely destroyed, however.


He accidentally set his hair on fire.
She thinks the arsonist set fire to the garage around midnight.
Police think he put a match to the garage to collect an insurance payout.
