In the centre of the tongue, there is a V-shaped row of larger papillae called vallate papillae. In particular, the fungiform and vallate papillae are involved in taste. Many of these glands are found at the posterior part of the tongue, behind the vallate papillae. Foliate taste buds reach a maximal number within two months, but vallate taste buds continue to increase in number until four months of age.
