a play in American football in which a quarterback throws a short pass to a running back or tight end(= a type of attacking player) because the receivers further down the field have opponents near to them:
The quarterback has started throwing more checkdown passes to keep defences guessing, in the hope of allowing his receivers to get open.
The running back is also good at receiving passes, so he gives the team an option if they want to run checkdown plays.
The tight end caught a checkdown pass at the line of scrimmage and eluded the defender to pick up ten yards.
