They divided instruments into four main classes according to the physical characteristics of the sound source (ie the vibrating agent): aerophones (in which the sound is generated by air), chordophones (by one or more strings), idiophones (by the body of the instrument itself), and membranophones (by a stretched membrane).
"Zither" is used as a generic term for a variety of instruments consisting of a string bearer with or without a separate resonator - in other words, a simple chordophone.
Some keyboard instruments (such as the organ) and some bowed instruments (such as the musical saw) are not chordophones.
