in rugby, the act of touching the ankle of a player from the other team as they are running so that they fall over:
The flying winger was only stopped from scoring by a last-ditch ankle tap yards from the line.
The French forward eluded his attempted ankle tap.
The ankle tap made the player stumble but he still managed to get across the line and score.
If you can't get close enough to tackle the player properly, a dive and an ankle tap are your only option.
