EBV noun[ U ] uk /ˌiː.biːˈviː/ us /ˌiː.biːˈviː/ abbreviation for Epstein-Barr virus: a virus that causes mononucleosis (= an infectious disease that has an effect on particular glands and makes you feel weak and sick for a long time) and is also connected to the development of other illnesses: Many children become infected with EBV, and these infections usually cause no symptoms. EBV infection may be the predisposing infection that induces immune-sensitivity. The association of EBV with gastric carcinoma cells has become well known recently. No patient referred to a history of infectious mononucleosis, but all of them had a past EBV infection, as documented by the antibody profile. The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), the cause of infectious mononucleosis, may be involved in the causation of Burkitt's lymphoma.
