endocast noun[ C ] anatomy, science specializeduk /ˈen.dəʊ.kɑːst/ us /ˈen.doʊ.kæst/ a model made to show the shape of a brain by pouring a substance into the inside of an empty skull(= the bones of the head): The general form of the brain can be outlined from the structure of the endocast. Endocasts are particularly useful for comparing brain sizes. In this specimen, both side walls of the endocast show symmetrical slight swellings. Endocasts taken from the inside of fossilized skulls have been compared to those of other species. Paleoanthropologists use endocasts to look for macroscopic differences in the brains of our human ancestors.
