one of several holes on a wind instrument which can be covered by the fingers to change the note:
The bamboo flute has six finger holes, five in the front and one thumb hole.

The first finger hole on the top of the instrument is farther down the tube than the thumb hole.
The finger hole must be covered if the pipe is to sound.
