out of joint phrase If a joint in the body is out of joint, it has been put or forced out of its correct position by accident: I put my shoulder out of joint last weekend lifting heavy boxes. The doctor told her that her hip was out of joint. He fell awkwardly and his knee popped out of joint. When she regained consciousness, her head hurt and her shoulder was out of joint.
