ayahuasca noun[ U ] uk /ˌaɪ.jəˈwɑː.skə/ us /ˌaɪ.jəˈwɑː.skə/ a drug made from the leaves of different South American plants, used in some religious ceremonies, that causes people who drink it to see the world differently from the way it really is or to see things that do not really exist: Ayahuasca is used in some South American communities to get in touch with the spirit world. As well as being hallucinogenic, ayahuasca is also claimed by some people to have health benefits. When in Peru, I took some ayahuasca when visiting a tribe, an experience I am never going to forget. Drinking ayahuasca was a central part of the ritual.
