jimson weed noun[ U ] mainly US(alsojimsonweed)uk /ˈdʒɪm.sən ˌwiːd/ us /ˈdʒɪm.sən ˌwiːd/ a plant or bush often grown in gardens, with large flowers that have a wide round opening at the top, sloping sides, and a narrow base, and leaves and seeds containing a substance used as a psychoactive drug (= one that affects your mind) or poison: Jimson weed poisoning is rarely fatal in adults but can be in young children. Jimsonweed has been growing wild in Hawaii at least since 1871. He had drunk a tea brewed from the seeds of jimson weed. Jimson weed is frequently found growing wild in neglected fields. The leaves and stems of jimsonweed release an unpleasant odour when crushed. Although jimsonweed is highly toxic, it has been used to treat asthma and Parkinson's disease.
