diploe noun[ U or C ] anatomy specialized(alsodiploë)uk /ˈdɪp.ləʊ.i/ us /ˈdɪp.loʊˌi/ the soft bone tissue between the inside and outside layers of the skull(= the rounded bone that holds the brain): The arteries of the cranium are principally distributed on its external surface, and the veins on its internal surface and diploe. Patients without a lesion developed thicker diploes with age. The veins of the diploë can only be seen after the pericranium is detached. In the bones of the skull, the compact substance forms the outer and inner tables, which have the spongy diploe between them. Under anaemic conditions, the cranial diploe expands and perforates the thin external table of the juvenile cranium. The occipital bone, like the other bones of the cranium, has two tables, with an intermediate diploe.
