Mortality of adults of the three species from parasitism was generally higher than that of the nymphal stages (table 2; figs 1-3). Efficacy is greater against nymphal and larval ticks than adults. An interesting result was the completion of the nymphal stages of both species when fed entirely on tobacco leaves. Both adult and nymphal ticks become persistently infected and provide an overwintering mechanism for the virus. The later stages of development are only seen in ticks which have been infected during the nymphal stages. The data are based on intact individuals with five nymphal instars only. Curiously, the constructs most effective against nymphal stages had no effect on adults and vice versa though they were portions of the same protein.
